When Mal returned to Charlotte in 1961, the Shelby club (technically within the Charlotte Young Life “Area”) was already going strong under the capable leadership of his longtime Shelby friend, Ronnie Austell. After pharmacy school at UNC, Ron spent two years as a pharmacist in Sylva, NC, where he started a YL club that continues to this day. Returning to Shelby in 1960, Ron found time to run a pharmacy and run point for the Shelby club. He and Nita (who died in 2019) were passionate about building friendships with teenagers, and with an open home they relished sharing with kids the love of Christ.
